Maruti Suzuki India on Thursday said cumulative production of its WagonR hatchback has crossed 35 lakh units in the country, marking a key milestone for one of the automaker’s longest-running nameplates.

Launched in December 1999, the WagonR became the third Maruti Suzuki model, after Alto and Swift, to achieve the milestone. The car is currently manufactured at the company’s facilities in Gurugram and Manesar in Haryana.

Calling it more than just a production achievement, Maruti Suzuki Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the milestone reflects the strong trust and emotional connect the WagonR has built with Indian customers over more than two decades.

“It is rare for a vehicle to receive such acceptance even after 25 years since its launch. The WagonR has evolved continuously with new technology and features, while retaining its original DNA,” he said in a statement.

The WagonR has been among Maruti Suzuki’s consistent top sellers, known for its tall-boy design, spacious cabin and fuel efficiency, attributes that have resonated with a wide base of urban and semi-urban buyers.

Globally, the Suzuki WagonR was first introduced in Japan in September 1993 as a semi-bonnet style mini wagon. The model is manufactured in multiple markets, including Japan, India, Hungary and Indonesia, and is sold in over 75 countries and regions across Asia, Europe and other markets.
