New Delhi: With the launch of the all-electric ES 500e on Friday, Lexus India has signalled its shift in strategy towards electrification for its executive sedan lineup. Even though hybrids remain part of Lexus’ global multi-pathway approach, the company’s top executive said there is currently no defined timeline for reintroducing the ES hybrid in India, with the market deciding the future move.

“The existing strong-hybrid ES, which has been on sale so far, will be phased out over time, making way for the new electric model. Any future decision on hybrids will be guided by customer feedback and market demand,” Hikaru Ikeuchi, President, Lexus India told ETAuto on the sidelines of the launch of BEV ES 500e.

The approach reflects a calibrated shift rather than a complete pivot where Lexus continues to back a mix of powertrains globally, but in India, the immediate focus appears to be on testing the waters with a premium EV offering in a segment that has traditionally leaned on hybrids and internal combustion engines.

First all-electric Lexus for India

The ES 500e marks a milestone for Lexus India, becoming the brand’s first fully electric offering in the country. Priced at Rs 89.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the sedan sits in the mid-size luxury segment and introduces the carmaker’s next-generation electrification technologies. Built on the TNGA GA-K platform, the ES 500e is powered by a 74.68 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, delivering up to 580 km of range on a single charge. The electric powertrain produces 252 kW, enabling a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of around 5.5 seconds, while also focusing on refinement, ride comfort and quietness—hallmarks of the ES brand globally.

The model also debuts Lexus’ new design language, inspired by its LF-ZC concept, blending a clean, minimalist aesthetic with aerodynamic efficiency. Inside, the sedan emphasises space and comfort, with a technology-rich cabin that includes a 14-inch multimedia display, connected car features, and an updated Lexus Safety System+ suite.

Customer experience over competition

Rather than positioning the ES 500e directly against specific rivals, Lexus said its focus remains on delivering a distinct ownership experience, anchored in the Japanese philosophy of Omotenashi—anticipating customer needs to create a more personalised and intuitive experience.

The company currently operates seven Guest Experience Centres across India and is studying future expansion as it looks to grow its footprint in the luxury segment.

Cautious outlook amid global uncertainty

On the broader market environment, Lexus acknowledged that geopolitical tensions and global uncertainties could impact the automotive sector, though it remains too early to quantify the effect.

India, however, continues to be a key market for the brand, supported by steady demand growth and a relatively well-managed energy landscape.
