JLR’s Tamil Nadu plant to create 5,000 direct jobs: Minister

Jaguar Land Rover’s new manufacturing facility in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu, is expected to create around 5,000 direct jobs, marking a major expansion of the luxury carmaker’s footprint in India and reinforcing the state’s position as a leading automotive manufacturing hub.

Tata Motors inaugurated the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) plant at Panapakkam in Ranipet district on Monday, adding a significant industrial asset to Tamil Nadu’s manufacturing ecosystem. According to a report by ANI, the greenfield facility has been developed with an investment of ₹9,000 crore ($994 million) and will produce both internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and electric vehicles (EVs).

T R B Rajaa, Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Industries, Investment Promotions and Commerce, said the project would generate at least 5,000 direct jobs, with a much larger employment impact expected through ancillary industries and supplier ecosystems around the facility. He added that the plant’s broader significance lies in the clustering of component manufacturers and allied units in the region.

Rajaa said the project was executed in record time, supported by swift regulatory clearances and coordination between the state government and Tata Group. He noted that the facility represents the first phase of a larger development plan, with further expansion expected in subsequent phases.

The workforce has been sourced from across Tamil Nadu through state-led skill development initiatives, including the Skill Development Corporation and the Naan Mudhalvan programme. According to Rajaa, a significant share of recruits has been drawn from the Ranipet district, contributing to inclusive regional growth.

The Ranipet facility aligns with Tamil Nadu’s strategy of promoting distributed industrial development across districts and strengthening its role in India’s future mobility ecosystem. With additional phases and investments anticipated, the state government expects the site to evolve into a major automotive manufacturing cluster in the coming years.
