Chinese automaker BYD is doubling down its game in India by targeting double-digit growth in the country as it continues to focus on premium segments, fleets and its in-house technology. “In 2026, we should also have a double-digit growth… that is the minimum expectation,” said Rajeev Chauhan, Head, EV Business, BYD India during its 48th dealership inauguration in partnership with PPS Motors on Wednesday.

The automaker clocked around 6,000 unit sales in 2025 in which the Seal has been one of the strongest performers. The company, which currently has four models in India (Seal, Sealion 7, SUV eMax 7, Atto 3), has received homologation for two of its models, and the timeline for the other two remains unclear.

“For the other two models, we will not be able to spell out the timeline, but yes we are working on that,” Chauhan added. Certifying its vehicles locally shows its attempt to meet the stringent localisation norms made by the GoI and to limit its import duties.

The company is also evaluating plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) based on market growth prospects. The Chinese automaker is taking a cautious step-by-step approach rather than keeping a long-term fixed target. Thus, the dealer network expansion aligns with market potential, he added.

Fleet operations with the eMax 7 vehicle remain a key growth driver for the company. “Fleet continues to be a key category for us,” he added.

PPS Motors, which has opened its sixth showroom with BYD and its first in North India, believes the electric passenger vehicle market is undergoing an evolution as consumer anxiety has reduced over time. “Earlier there was anxiety around range, charging time and resale… that is now reducing… A significant number of buyers are opting for EVs as second or third cars. We are also seeing younger buyers considering BYD as their aspirational cars,” said Rajiv Singhvi, MD, PPS Motors.

The company which entered the country in 2007 bets big on its technology such as Blade Battery 2.0 which helps charge a vehicle from 0 to 100 per cent in five minutes. “With the new architecture, you can have your car charged in just 5 minutes for 400 to 500 kilometres of range… We are extremely proud of the R&D strength… that is what makes us stay ahead of the curve,” Chauhan added.

The company currently provides this technology to Indian automakers such as Maruti Suzuki India and Mahindra & Mahindra.
