Who are Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal? Afghan asylum seekers jailed for raping 15-year-old girl in Britain

Two Afghan asylum seekers who arrived in Britain on small boats have been jailed for raping a 15-year-old girl in Leamington Spa after dragging her into a dark park.Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal, both 17, lured the teenager away from her friends on May 10 before forcing her to perform oral sex in a secluded area, reports the Daily Mail. The girl screamed for help and filmed harrowing footage on her phone as she was led away, the clip was played in Warwick Crown Court.Judge Sylvia de Bertodano sentenced Jahanzeb to 10 years and eight months and Niazal to nine years and 10 months, noting the younger boy’s age at the time of the offence. “No child should have to suffer the ordeal (the victim) has suffered. The fact is, you two have robbed her of her childhood and nothing that the sentence of this court and nothing I can do today can restore that,” the judge said. She added: “You have betrayed the interests of those, like you, who come here fleeing harm and seeking safety and for that you should feel a deep and lasting sense of shame.”CCTV released after sentencing showed the boys leading the victim across a bridge at 9.21pm, flanking her on either side. At one point Jahanzeb covered her mouth as she screamed. The girl later escaped and recorded further videos describing her ordeal before a passerby took her to a police station. Prosecutor Shawn Williams said: “The evidence of lack of consent is overwhelming. The facts reveal a deeply distressing and predatory sexual offence on a vulnerable and highly intoxicated 15-year-old.”In her victim impact statement, the girl said: “The day I was raped changed me as a person. I’m no longer a happy, care-free teenager. This was my first sexual experience. When I go out, I no longer feel safe, so much so that I have started to avoid it all together.”According to the court, Jahanzeb had crossed the Channel in January after three failed attempts, while Niazal arrived in November 2024. Both were living in taxpayer-funded housing at the time of the attack. Jahanzeb now faces deportation, though Niazal may remain in the UK because he pleaded guilty a day before turning 17.Defence lawyers tried to keep the teenagers anonymous, claiming the footage was so gruesome it could trigger public disorder. The judge rejected those arguments and said the public interest in identifying them was greater.
