New York woman charged with smuggling Indian nationals from Canada into US; faces up to 20 years

A New York woman is accused of plotting an international scheme to smuggle migrants, mostly Indian nationals from Canada, into the United States for profit. 42-year-old Stacey Taylor from Plattsburgh has been charged by prosecutors. She appeared in court on Monday after a federal grand jury indicted her on October 2, according to the Justice Department.Court records state that US Border Patrol agents stopped Taylor’s vehicle near Churubusco, New York, in January. Inside, officers found four men who had just crossed the border illegally in freezing conditions. Three of the men were Indian nationals and one was Canadian. Investigators later examined Taylor’s mobile phone and said they found messages suggesting she had taken part in several other smuggling trips in the days leading up to her arrest.Taylor has also been linked to two more suspected smuggling incidents since January. Authorities say she was stopped in a suspected attempt in August 2025 and again connected to smuggling activity in September. The indictment charges her with conspiring to engage in alien smuggling and four counts of alien smuggling for profit. Three of those counts are listed as second or subsequent offences. According to the Justice Department, each count carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison, with additional penalties possible for repeat offences. The case is part of Joint Task Force Alpha, a programme run by the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security that focuses on breaking up human smuggling and trafficking groups. Officials say the task force has already led to more than 425 arrests and over 375 convictions. The case also falls under ‘Operation Take Back America,’ which is a national effort to tackle illegal immigration of aliens and the criminal networks behind it.
