Compact cars and SUVs together account for nearly 75 per cent of all motor insurance claims in India, highlighting their overwhelming presence on Indian roads and their disproportionate share in insurers’ payouts, according to an ANI report citing a PolicyBazaar analysis.

Compact cars account for the largest share of claims at 44 per cent, driven by city traffic and mid-value repairs that cost an average of ₹21,084 per claim.

SUVs account for the second-largest segment, with a 32 per cent share. Their repair costs average ₹29,032, reflecting the higher component and structural costs of larger vehicles. SUVs claim frequency stands at 16 per cent, per the analysis.

Electric vehicles account for 1 per cent of total claim volumes but recorded the highest claim frequency at 29 per cent and the highest repair severity, averaging ₹39,021 per claim. The report said high repair costs are linked to the cost of batteries and electronic systems.
Region-wise, northern India records the highest share of motor insurance claims, while the southern region accounts for 31 per cent of the total.
