NEW DELHI: Warning that fake news poses a direct threat to India’s democracy, I&B minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Wednesday told Lok Sabha the govt is moving to strengthen the legal framework to curb misinformation and AI-driven deepfakes across digital platforms.Vaishnaw said the manner in which social media is being used has led to the creation of “certain ecosystems that do not wish to follow Constitution or laws passed by Parliament”. He stressed the need for firm action against platforms that enable the spread of false and misleading content. He said new rules have already been introduced, including a provision mandating takedown of unlawful or misleading content within 36 hours.Addressing concerns over freedom of expression, Vaishnaw said govt was maintaining a balance between free speech and protection of democratic institutions. He said under PM Modi’s leadership, Digital India has democratised access to technology, which must also be seen for its positive impact in empowering citizens.
