‘Thudarum’: Director explains why Lalitha didn’t kill George sir

'Thudarum': Why Lalitha didn’t kill George sir; Tharun Moorthy breaks silence on Shobana’s character

Director Tharun Moorthy clarified why Shobana’s character didn’t kill George Sir in ‘Thudarum’s climax. He explained the creative decision stemmed from his internal emotional justification, prioritizing Benz’s psychological burden over Lalitha’s actions. Moorthy stressed this artistic choice was free from commercial pressures, aiming for a truthful narrative that resonated with his inner vision, acknowledging diverse audience expectations.

The discussions surrounding ‘Thudarum’ are far from over. Recently a question was asked to the director Tharun Moorthy on why didn’t Lalitha, the character played by Shobana, kill George Sir in the climax?Director addressed the not-so-discussed query during Malayala Manorama’s Horthus event.

Tharun Moorthy’s explanation

Tharun Moorthy said that no film can ever satisfy every viewer’s imagination, and his creative process centered on responding honestly to the “viewer within” himself. He explained that while writing the screenplay, he constantly questioned which version of the climax would feel more emotionally justified to him. According to him, when the story unfolded on paper, it became clear that Benz’s psychological burden and emotional conflict were far greater than Lalitha’s, and therefore the ending felt more truthful when Benz killed George Sir instead of Lalitha.

Nothing to do with commercial pressure

Tharun emphasised that the creative call had nothing to do with commercial pressure or outside influence. There was no interference from the producer, there were no demands from any superstar, and there was no compromise for the sake of mass appeal. His words made his position clear: “The viewer within me wanted it that way, and the director within me delivered it.” He acknowledged that some audience members may have been disappointed and wished the climax unfolded differently, but he maintained that cinema can never satisfy everyone equally, and every viewer has their own perception.
