Tesla has begun deliveries of the Model Y in India and is preparing to expand its presence across more cities as it scales its retail and charging footprint.

American electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla is planning a nationwide charging network to support its growing customer base in India, even as it strengthens its retail and service presence with the launch of its first Tesla Centre in Gurugram.

According to a report by PTI, Sharad Agarwal, General Manager, Tesla India, said the company intends to build charging infrastructure aligned with customer lifestyles. “The future roadmap will be to have a charging infrastructure to cover all major cities. We always build our infrastructure around the lifestyle of our customers — where they eat, where they work, where they go for staycations,” he said at the launch.

The Tesla Centre, located at Orchid Business Park in Gurugram, integrates sales, after-sales service, delivery and charging facilities under one roof. This is Tesla’s third major retail point in the country after experience centres in Mumbai and Delhi.

Expansion plans

Agarwal said Tesla currently operates three superchargers in Delhi and Mumbai, with one more set to go live in Gurugram shortly. With the upcoming commissioning, Tesla will have four stations across India, equipped with 16 superchargers and 10 destination chargers. The company is also working with hotels and other hospitality partners to offer charging access for visiting guests. He stressed that improving air quality in cities like Delhi and Mumbai requires rapid adoption of zero-emission mobility. “We have delivered more than 8 million cars worldwide, which has helped reduce carbon emissions by 32 million tonnes. That is the kind of sustainable future we are talking about,” he said.

Agarwal added that India, with several major cities grappling with severe pollution, stands to benefit significantly from the transition to electric mobility. “Our mission is to accelerate the world’s transition towards sustainability. And when we are talking of this mission, we are not only looking at the product, but also the way we sell to our customers and how we bring these products to our customers,” he said.

Tesla operates a direct-to-consumer sales model that differs from the traditional dealership-driven approach in India. Agarwal said the model has generated strong interest among prospective buyers. “Our direct business model has sparked huge excitement for electric mobility, driving strong adoption and lasting confidence in sustainable transport across India,” he said.
