External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi for bilateral talks in New Delhi. In his opening remarks at the meeting in New Delhi, Jaishankar said that both nations now seek to move ahead after a “difficult period” in the bilateral ties.

The bilateral ties hit rock bottom following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020. After nearly four years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in the Russian city of Kazan on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in October last year, reviving various dialogue mechanisms between the two sides.

“Having seen a difficult period in our relationship, our two nations now seek to move ahead. This requires a candid and constructive approach from both sides,” Jaishankar said while underlining that differences must not become disputes.

The EAM also highlighted the need for maintaining and enhancing stability in the global economy in the current environment. He also said that the fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is another major priority.

“I welcome you and your delegation to India at the start of your visit for the 24th round of talks between the Special Representatives of India and China. This is also the first visit by a Chinese Minister since our leaders met in Kazan in October 2024. This occasion provides us with an opportunity to meet and review our bilateral ties. It is also an appropriate time to exchange views on the global situation and some issues of mutual interest,” he said.

“When the world’s two largest nations meet, it is natural that the international situation will be discussed. We seek a fair, balanced and multi-polar world order, including a multi-polar Asia. Reformed multilateralism is also the call of the day,” he added.

We Maintained Peace & Tranquillity In Border Areas: Wang Yi

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said both nations maintained peace and tranquillity in the border areas.

“We resumed the Indian pilgrimage to Mount Gang Renpoche and Lake Mapam Yun Tso in the Xijang Autonomous Region. We shared confidence to dispel interference, expand cooperation and to further consolidate the momentum of improvement and development of China-India relations, so that while pursuing our respective rejuvenation, we can contribute to each other’s success and provide the most needed certainty to Asia and the world,” he said.

Why Is Wang Yi’s Visit Significant?

Wang’s visit comes days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned trip to China to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The Chinese foreign minister is visiting India primarily to hold the next round of Special Representatives’ (SR) dialogue on the boundary question with National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval.

The Chinese foreign minister’s trip is also seen as important as it comes amid increasing tensions in India-US relations following President Donald Trump doubling tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent which included an additional penalty of 25 per cent for purchasing Russian crude oil.

Wang and NSA Doval are scheduled to hold a new edition of SR dialogue on the boundary question at 11 am on Tuesday.

According to the MEA, Wang will call on PM Modi at his 7 Lok Kalyan Marg residence at 5:30 pm on Tuesday.
