Kantara 2 mints Rs 3.73 crore on 6th weekend despite OTT release

Rishab Shetty’s ‘Kantara : A Legend Chapter 1’ mints Rs 3.73 crore on 6th weekend despite OTT release

Rishab Shetty’s culturally rich film, Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1, continues its phenomenal run, becoming India’s 7th highest-grossing film. Despite an early OTT release, it amassed Rs 618.78 crore, with strong performances from its Kannada and Hindi versions. The film’s enduring box office appeal suggests it could have challenged higher ranks had it not debuted on streaming.

Rishab Shetty’s Kantara : A Legend Chapter 1 has gone down in history as one of the biggest culturally rooted and successful films in Indian cinema, it is currently the 7th biggest box office hit of India. The film was released on OTT on the 29th day of its release, sending shock waves in the industry. But even then the film was able to mint Rs 3.73 crore over 6th weekend and took the overall collection of the film to Rs 618.78 crore with Rs 221.86 crore coming from Hindi and Rs 198.53 crore coming from Kannada. In the 6th weekend the Kannada version brought Rs 1.16 Cr to the table while Hindi version added Rs 2.31 crore, Tamil version added Rs 20 lakh , while Telugu and Malayalam version brought in Rs 3 lakh each, thereby reaching the overall collection of Rs 3.73 crore. The OTT release of the film has happened in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam version with Hindi version hitting the streaming platform only after it completes 8 weeks in cinema halls. The Hindi version on Friday collected just Rs 34 lakh but on Saturday the film minted Rs 83 lakh showcasing a 144 % jump and on Sunday it witnessed an over 37 % jump to collect Rs 1.14 crore. These numbers suggest that the film still has long legs at the box office and had the film not been released on OTT platform , it could challenge Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan for 6th biggest hit of Indian Cinema spot; it had collected over Rs 640 crore at the ticket window. Kantara 2 features Rishab Shetty alongside Rukmini Vasanth, Gulshan Devaiah and Jayaram. The franchise will return for the third part which was announced in the climax of the second part but it will take a few years to go on floors as Rishab has few big projects as an actor in his hands like Jai Hanuman and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s biopic.
