Outing turns fatal, NIT Silchar pupil drowns, 2 missing

SILCHAR: A first-year BTech student of NIT Silchar drowned and two of his batchmates went missing after slipping into a deep section of Bouchal waterfall near Hmunthajao in Assam’s Dima Hasao district on Saturday, reports BB Goswami.Police said the students – Sohardya Rai (20) and Sarb Kritika (20) from Uttar Pradesh, and Radhika (19) from Bihar – had gone on a day trip to the popular tourist spot along with four other students. Sarb Kritika’s body has been recovered.Additional SP Faruk Ahmed said a rescue operation was launched immediately by local police, with SDRF and NDRF teams later joining in. “The operation continued till late evening but was halted after dark. It will resume Sunday morning,” he said, adding that rough terrain and poor connectivity hampered efforts.A team from NIT Silchar is at the site, coordinating with authorities. Locals said waterfalls in the region often turn dangerous during this season.
