CJI Gavai has recommended Justice Surya Kant, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court after him, to succeed him as the next Chief Justice of India. The recommendation, sent to the Union law ministry under the Memorandum of Procedure, sets the stage for Justice Kant to take over as the 53rd CJI on November 24
