Johnny Lever, one of India’s most iconic comedians, has ruled the big screen for decades and done seen so many movies with SRK. From ‘Baazigar’ to ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham,’ he has shared screen space with him in several blockbusters that defined the 1990s and early 2000s. But long before SRK became “King Khan,” Johnny had already made a name for himself as a star performer. The veteran actor opened up about Shah Rukh’s early days in Bollywood and the bond they built while working together.
When Johnny said SRK wasn’t good at dance or action
During a chat with YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, Johnny Lever recalled the early phase of Shah Rukh Khan’s career. He remembered how the now-superstar wasn’t known for his dancing or action skills back then. Yet, his drive to improve was unmatched. Johnny revealed, “We started working together in Baazigar back in 1991. He had done Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman and a few other films by then but I was more famous than him at that time. Even during the shoot, more people knew me. I was a star back then, Shah Rukh was upcoming. We had great understanding.”What impressed Johnny most was SRK’s relentless effort. “I have never seen anyone as hardworking as him, so hardworking.” He said men envied him because of his charm, but Shah Rukh stayed focused on his craft. That discipline, Johnny believes, is what made him a global star today.
When Johnny was more famous than Shah Rukh Khan
Johnny fondly recalled that during Baazigar’s shoot, he was a bigger name in the industry. His comedy had already earned him immense love, while Shah Rukh was still finding his footing. Even so, Johnny noticed something different about him, an unshakable hunger to grow. Their chemistry on sets turned into genuine friendship, leading to collaborations in many movies.
