Legendary adman Piyush Pandey passes away at 69, celebs pay tribute to him

The Indian advertising industry lost one of its brightest creative minds as Piyush Pandey passed away on Thursday. A name synonymous with storytelling and emotion-driven campaigns, Pandey spent over four decades with Ogilvy India, transforming the face of Indian advertising.He joined Ogilvy in 1982, stepping into an English-dominated industry at the age of 27 and went on to change its language, tone, and soul forever.Mourning his passing, businessman Suhel Seth shared an emotional note on social media, and said, “I am deeply saddened and shattered by the loss of my dearest friend, the genius Piyush Pandey. India has not only lost a great advertising mind but also a true patriot and a wonderful human being.” He added, “Now there will be a dance in heaven to ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara.’”Filmmaker Hansal Mehta too paid tribute with a heartfelt post which read, “Fevicol ka jod toot gaya. Aaj ad world ne apna glue kho diya. Piyush Pandey, aap acche se jao. (The Fevicol bond has broken. The ad world has lost its glue today. Piyush Pandey, go in peace.)” Union Minister Piyush Goyal also expressed his grief, saying, “Words fall short to express my sadness on the passing of Padma Shri Piyush Pandey. A towering figure in the world of advertising, his creative genius redefined storytelling and gave us unforgettable narratives that will live on.” He further added, “To me, he was a friend whose brilliance shone through his honesty, warmth, and wit. I will always cherish our engaging conversations. He leaves behind a deep void that will be hard to fill. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and admirers.” Born in 1955 in Jaipur, Piyush Pandey grew up in a large family with nine siblings, seven sisters and two brothers. His father worked at a bank, and before finding his calling in advertising, Pandey also spent several years playing cricket.His creative legacy includes some of India’s most iconic campaigns and taglines which are remembered by every Indian household.
