Sudipto criticized and schooled by influencer

'The Kerala Story' director Sudipto Sen criticized and schooled by influencer for dismissing 'Aadujeevitham' visuals as 'VFX-created'

The debate surrounding the 71st National Film Awards has intensified after The Kerala Story director, Sudipto Sen, attempted to explain why Blessy’s critically acclaimed film, Aadujeevitham, did not secure top cinematography honors. Sen drew sharp criticism by arguing that Aadujeevitham’s impressive visuals were merely “created with VFX,” a claim that was quickly and thoroughly dismantled by an Instagram influencer, Carl Lafrenais.

Sudipto Sen responds to questions on ‘The Kerala Story’s win

Responding to a social media user who questioned how his film won Best Cinematography over Aadujeevitham, Sen wrote, “Do you know why an award is given for cinematography?” He claimed that though he “also liked Aadujeevitham,” its visuals were “created with VFX.”Sudipto Sen went on to urge the user to “listen to the juries” and not argue online, adding, “Instagram gives you the chance to write but does not give you the right to write anything.” Citing the proverb, “A little learning is a dangerous thing,” he remarked, “Since you are from Kerala, I expect more sensible things from Keralalites.” His tone drew criticism from several users who felt his response was condescending and dismissive.

Influencer’s sharp comeback with Oscar-winning examples

Instagram influencer Carl Lafrenais offered what many called the most balanced response in the thread, dismantling Sen’s VFX-based argument. He wrote, “That is why Blade Runner 2049 won the Oscar for Best Cinematography. It is why Life of Pi, Gravity and Dune also took home the same award.” Lafrenais argued that if VFX were disqualifying, “half of the greatest visual achievements in cinema would not even be in the conversation.”Lafrenais also rebuked Sen’s moral lecture on online discourse. “It is called freedom of expression. A little understanding of democracy might help too. ” he wrote, ending with, “For the love of cinema, do not compare your ‘movie’ [The Kerala Story] with Aadujeevitham.”

Aadujeevitham’s omission still stings fans and critics

Blessy’s Aadujeevitham, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, was hailed for its visual grandeur and emotional depth. Film lovers also questioned on what basis a mediocre film like ‘Kerala Story’ was given the National Award for Best Direction and Best Cinematography.
