'Imagine being triggered by...': Row over 'Diwali-themed' chocolate in Canada store

A post criticizing the sale of Diwali-themed chocolates at a Canada store triggered a major social media debate.

A social media post of Diwali-themed chocolates by Lindt being sold at a Canadian store has gone viral, triggering outrage over why Diwali products have taken over Canadian stores. This comes as Hindu groups in Canada protested against fireworks ban on Diwali by several local councils. “WTF. This is Canada not India,” the viral post on X read. It showed a rack of a store with Lindt chocolates with ‘Happy Joyeous Diwali’ written on it. Mixed reactions came as many social media users asked whether India should stop celebrating Christmas. “It’s neither Canada nor India – it’s Economics. Whatever sells…” one wrote. “It’s corporate candy, not a national icon. We should stick to important battles and try not to be too critical of the market being the market. There are a lot of Indian people here. People are free to buy it or leave it rot. The more integral critique is on immigration policy,” another wrote. “Imagine being triggered by the sight of chocolate. Diwali is next week. Once it’s over, the stores will replace these boxes with Halloween candy – after which, they will move on to Christmas merchandise. They’re just trying to make some money by selling stuff that people want,” one responded to the viral post. “There are legitimate complaints about how mass migration has changed our country. Diwali themed chocolates is not one of them,” one wrote.

Diwali fireworks permit in Mississauga

Mississauga city council decided on October 15 that they won’t ban Diwali fireworks but a revised bylaw will bring in stricter rules aimed at reducing noise, injuries and property damage. The new bylaw still permits consumer fireworks on five holidays — Lunar New Year, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Diwali and New Year’s Eve — but introduces tighter restrictions. These include shorter hours for setting off fireworks (now limited between 6 to 10 pm on all holidays except New Year’s Eve, which allows use from 11 pm to 1 am), a ban on Roman candles, tighter sales windows, and a requirement for licensed vendors to log inventory and sales data. Fireworks sales would also be prohibited on the day of each holiday, to curb last-minute purchases and improve enforcement.
