Gulshan was told to buy a second hand luxury car for ‘image’

'Kantara: Chapter 1' actor Gulshan Deviah recalls someone telling him to buy a second hand BMW or Mercedes for image: 'I know how perception works'

Gulshan Deviah is getting a lot of love for being a part of ‘Kantara: chapter 1’. The actor has always carved his own path and made unique choices, not just onscreen, but even off-screen, he is different from other actors. He engages with everyone—friends, critics, and trolls—without pretense. Explaining his candid approach, the actor says, “There are self-placed filters. I want to be fun and myself like I am in this conversation. I want to crack the same jokes online and be my authentic self. That is who I am.”Though Gulshan has been a familiar face on screen for years, his filmography isn’t extensive. Yet, he has managed to leave a mark with nearly every performance. His latest outing, Kantara Chapter 1, has become a global box-office juggernaut, earning both massive collections and critical appreciation. In the wake of its phenomenal success, Gulshan spoke to Hindustan Times about his perspective on fame, authenticity, and staying grounded.Over the years, many have labelled him “underrated,” with social media flooded by comments saying he is “finally getting his due.” Gulshan takes such remarks in stride. “Even if people call me underrated as a criticism, I take it positively,” he says. Elaborating further, he adds, “For instance, well-wishers tell me I don’t monetise my career. And I get their point. It’s valid. Once somebody told me to buy a big car, a second-hand BMW or Mercedes ki thoda image banega (for the image). From their point of view, they are correct because I know how perception works in this industry. But you can’t control that. I stay as authentic as I can. Unko please karne ke liye main nahi karunga (I won’t do anything to please others).”Currently running successfully in theatres, Kantara Chapter 1—written and directed by Rishab Shetty—features Rishab alongside Gulshan, with Rukmini Vasanth and Jayaram rounding out the cast.
