Tesla unveils ‘affordable’ Model 3 and Y trims, but analysts say prices still too high

Tesla has introduced lower-cost versions of its best-selling Model Y SUV and Model 3 sedan in an attempt to revive demand, but analysts and investors say the prices — starting at $39,990 and $36,990 respectively — are still too high to attract a broader base of electric vehicle (EV) buyers.

As per Reuters, while CEO Elon Musk had earlier said a sub-$30,000 EV would be crucial to achieving mass-market penetration, the new variants are only about $5,000 cheaper than the next-level trims, disappointing market watchers. Tesla’s stock fell 4.5 per cent on Tuesday following the announcement.

Standard version to boost sales?

The new “Standard” versions feature simplified interiors, manual mirrors, and reduced battery capacity, but still offer over 300 miles (480 km) of driving range. Premium features such as rear seat heating, Autosteer, and LED light bars have been removed to cut costs. Deliveries are expected between December 2025 and January 2026, according to Tesla’s website. Analysts say the modest price cut is unlikely to deliver a major sales boost, especially amid intensifying competition from cheaper Chinese brands and new EVs from Chevrolet, Hyundai, and Kia.

“It’s basically a pricing lever and not much of a product catalyst,” said Shay Boloor, chief market strategist at Futurum Equities. “I don’t see it as unlocking new demand at scale.”

Slumping sales

Tesla is facing falling sales across key markets, hit by aging models, the expiration of the $7,500 U.S. tax credit, and mounting competition in Europe and China. Some automakers have already slashed prices or devised new mechanisms to retain the benefit of tax incentives. In Europe, Tesla’s brand image has also been dented by Musk’s political views, while rival automakers are flooding the market with sub-$30,000 EVs and plug-in hybrids.

“Longer term, this doesn’t solve the problem posed by low-cost Chinese competitors,” said Shawn Campbell of Camelthorn Investments. “Tesla needs a sub-$30k EV.”

Musk himself admitted during Tesla’s Q2 earnings call that affordability remains the biggest barrier: “The desire to buy the car is very high. People just don’t have enough money in the bank account to buy it.”

Despite the criticism, the move is seen as Tesla’s attempt to retain relevance in the mid-market EV space while it pivots toward AI-driven initiatives like robotaxis and humanoid robots.

“For the market, this is Tesla dropping its Steve Jobs turtleneck and slipping into a Walmart hoodie,” said Michael Ashley Schulman, Chief Investment Officer at Running Point. “It’s no longer the cool rebel — it’s now trying to be both Tesla and Toyota at once.”
