A woman asked a police officer “am I gonna die?” after being stabbed 18 times by her boyfriend in a brutal assault at her home, a UK court has heard.

Rebekah Campbell, 32, was found fatally injured outside her flat in Huyton, Merseyside, on the night of April 15 this year. She died in the early hours of the following day.

Michael Ormandy, 34, is now on trial at Liverpool Crown Court accused of her murder. He denies the charge, claiming he acted in self-defence, Daily Mail reported.

During the prosecution’s opening on Monday, the jury was told that Rebekah had been on a phone call with a friend when the attack began. She was described as shouting “I’ve been stabbed” before collapsing outside her flat. Neighbours rushed to help, and she told them, “My fella stabbed me.”

David McLachlan KC, prosecuting, said the attack was “sustained and violent”, with Rebekah suffering 27 incised wounds in total — including 18 stab wounds and nine slash wounds. Injuries on her arms suggested she tried to defend herself.

As she was treated by police and paramedics, she asked one officer, “Am I gonna die?” She was pronounced dead shortly after midnight on April 16. A post-mortem found the cause of death to be stab wounds to the chest.

The prosecution claims Ormandy had a clear intention to kill, based on the number and severity of the wounds. The couple had been in a relationship for around four months, described by the prosecution as “troubled.” Ormandy had allegedly insulted and pushed Rebekah in past incidents.

Upon arrest, just six minutes before Rebekah was declared dead, Ormandy reportedly told police: “This wouldn’t have happened if you did your job last week,” referring to a previous altercation between them in Liverpool city centre.

Ormandy claims Rebekah came at him with a knife and that he acted in self-defence.He is represented in court by Nick Johnson KC and Daniel Travers. The trial is expected to last around two weeks.
