British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Tuesday termed a “living nightmare for many” the two years since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which sparked the war in Gaza.

Starmer, who made the landmark move for the UK to recognise a state of Palestine last month alongside other allies, also welcomed the US plan “towards peace in the Middle East” in his statement.

The UK Prime Minister said the period had seen “rising antisemitism” in the UK, days after two Jewish men were killed in an attack against a Manchester synagogue.

“Today we mark two years since the horrifying attacks on Israel by Hamas terrorists on October 7th 2023. Time does not diminish the evil we saw that day. The worst attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust. The brutal, cold blooded torture and murder of Jews in their own homes. And the taking of hostages, including British citizens, some of whom remain in Gaza today,” the UK PM wrote in an X post.

“Since that awful day, so many have endured a living nightmare,” he added.

“But back here in the UK, our Jewish communities have also endured rising antisemitism on our streets, in our country,” he mentioned, adding, “last week, a horrifying terrorist attack on the holy day of Yom Kippur in Manchester.”

As Starmer welcomed the US initiative towards peace in the Middle East, he wrote, “We welcome the US initiative towards peace in the Middle East, and this government will do everything in our power to bring about the day where every child of Israel can live peacefully, alongside their Palestinian neighbours, in safety and security.” <

Hamas’s October 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Militants also seized 251 hostages, 47 of whom are still in Gaza. Of those, the Israeli military says 25 are dead.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed at least 67,160 Palestinians over the last two years, according to health ministry figures in the Hamas-run territory that the United Nations considers reliable.
