US President Donald Trump on Sunday praised the US Navy SEALs for their 2011 raid that killed Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, while also claiming that he had warned about bin Laden’s threat a year before the September 11, 2001, World Trade Center attacks.

Addressing supporters at an event in Washington, DC, Trump said, “History will never forget that it was the SEALs who stormed the compound at Osama bin Laden and put a bullet in his head. Remember that.”

Trump went on to claim that he had mentioned bin Laden as a danger to the United States a year before the 9/11 attacks.

“Please remember, I wrote about Osama bin Laden exactly one year ago, one year before he blew up the World Trade Center,” Trump said.

“…And I said, ‘You got to watch Osama bin Laden’. And the fake news would never let me get away with that statement unless it was true,” Trump said.

Referring to his earlier writings, he added, “In a book I wrote, whatever the hell the title, I can’t tell you, but I can tell you there’s a page in there devoted to the fact that I saw somebody named Osama bin Laden and I didn’t like it and you got to take care of him. And they didn’t do it.”

“A year later, he (Osama) blew up the World Trade Center,” Trump said.

“So, we got to take a little credit because nobody else is going to give it to me,” he added.

The 9/11 attacks, carried out by Al-Qaeda operatives under bin Laden’s leadership, killed nearly 3,000 people. Bin Laden was killed a decade later, on May 2, 2011, during a raid by US Navy SEALs on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

THE BOOK TRUMP REFERRED TO

Trump’s remarks appeared to refer to a 2000 book he authored, titled ‘The America We Deserve’, in which he mentioned bin Laden as a potential threat to US security.

However, the book did not specifically predict the 9/11 attacks or suggest an imminent strike.

As the book was published in January that year, while Trump campaigned for President in the US election on the Reform Party’s ticket, it detailed a set of policy proposals Trump intended to implement should he ever become President.

In the book, Trump also endorsed some proposals he said he would abandon by his 2016 election run. He proposed a 14.25 per cent wealth tax on individuals and trusts valued at more than $10 million.

The book also supports a universal health care system.
