A man opened fire from an apartment in Sydney, leaving nearly 20 people injured. As many as 14 people were treated on the spot after they suffered minor injuries.

The man reportedly fired between 50 and 100 shots at random from a .30-calibre rifle on Sunday night in the suburb of Croydon Park. According to officials cited by media outlets, the gunfire was aimed at the passing vehicles and people on the street, including police vehicles.

Of the people who were injured, two people were treated in the hospital, while one, who was critically injured, was undergoing surgery. The suspect was also apprehended by the police, according to Superintendent Stephen Parry. The police arrested him in his apartment and seized a .30-calibre rifle.

“It is incredible that nobody died,” he told a press conference, adding that the man, who had no links to organised crime or terror groups, was expected to be charged with firearms offences.

“The male person has no recorded mental health history with us,” he added.

“He’s being assessed in relation to physical and mental health injuries overnight and this morning, and he’s been deemed suitable to return to custody.”

The officials are yet to ascertain the motive behind the incident.

Eyewitness Joe Azar told the Sydney Morning Herald that at first, he mistook the noise for fireworks or stones hitting windows. “Some guy’s windshield blew up, then the bus stop glass shattered,” he said.

Earlier, a police spokesperson told Reuters they did not believe there were terror or religious motives for the incident.

The suspect had very few recorded interactions with police over the last 20 years, Parry said.
