Pankaj Kapur calls Shahid Kapoor ‘self-made’
In a Punjabi interview with SMTV, Pankaj Kapur reflected on how his father encouraged him to study acting at a time when such dreams were rare in Ludhiana.“My father was a man of a different calibre. He would come and see every play of mine. Yes, before I left, he told me the English saying, ‘You have burnt your boats, don’t look back’. This inspired me, to have my father’s support. Whatever I learnt from him, I transferred to my three children… Shahid is a self-made man. What could I have to do with his success? I contributed nothing more than genes. Everything that he has achieved is because of his own hard work. I am very proud of it. I am not being humble, I am being truthful,” he said.
Pankaj Kapur gave his children freedom to choose
Pankaj Kapur also noted that he never wanted his children to feel pressured by his presence. “They are welcome to discuss ideas with me, but the decisions will always be theirs, so that they never blame me for their failures.”
When Shahid Kapoor reflected on his journey
Shahid has often said he faced the industry on his own. Raised by his mother Neelima Azeem after his parents’ separation, he began working as a background dancer in his teens before breaking into films. In a conversation with Neha Dhupia’s talk show ‘No Filter Neha,’ the ‘R… Rajkumar’ actor said, “See, everybody says this ‘Pankaj ka beta hai’ and all that, but you know character actors don’t have any power, only stars and superstars and big film directors and producers have power, so it’s not a big deal. Secondly, I actually stayed with my mom, so I never told anybody because my parents were separated, and there was this whole pride thing that I didn’t want to say anything to anybody, so I never told anybody. Actually, I told my dad that I had signed a film after I signed it. He didn’t even know.”
