Kantara 2 takes third biggest opening of 2025

Rishab Shetty’s ‘ Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1’ takes the third biggest opening of 2025 after Rajinikanth’s 'Coolie' and Pawan Kalyan’s 'They Call Him OG’

Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1 achieved a massive Rs 60 crore opening in India, becoming the third biggest opener of 2025, driven by holiday releases and the original film’s success. However, its North American debut was tepid, with premiere and Day 1 collections under USD 800,000, significantly short of its USD 7.5 million break-even target.

When Rishab Shetty has set out to make Kantara back in 2021-2022 even wouldn’t be aware that the film he’s working on would be changing the face of Kannada cinema across the globe. The film was a global success and in India itself it earned more than Rs 310 crore. As the sequel of the film Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1 hit the cinema halls backed the Gandhi Jayanti and Dusshera holiday coupled with the massive love for the first part led the film to take one of the biggest openings of the year. The film on it’s first day minted Rs 60 crore as per Sacnilk and placed it on the third spot as the biggest opener of 2025. The first two stops have been taken by Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagraj’s Coolie which opened to Rs 65 crore collection on 14th August. And the second spot is taken up by actor turned politician Pawan Kalyan with his latest film They Call Him OG which had collected Rs 63.75 crore. The other top contenders in the list were Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s War 2 which had collected Rs 52 crore while Ram Charan and Shankar’s Game Changer had collected Rs 51 crore on it’s opening day. These collections are across languages and most of these films were released in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. While Kantara had sent the box office on fire on it’s first day 1 in India but the response to the film in North America had been very tepid. The film was able to cross just USD 500,000 for it’s premiere shows and on it day 1 the collection fell to just USD 255,00. BUt the advance sales for day 2 is already nearing USD 200,000 and going by the trend the film is expected to cross USD 500,000 and with that the film will cross the USD 1 million mark. The journey ahead for the film is long as the break even point for the film is more than USD 7.5 million.
