Will Prabhas be able to continue his box office streak with The Raja Saab ?

Prabhas is on an unbeatable run at the box office, effortlessly pulling in large Day 1 revenues after the monumental success of Baahubali 2. His latest venture, The Raja Saab, takes a bold leap into the realms of comedy-horror, showcasing his versatility while his magnetic star presence continues to shine.

Post the release of Baahubali 2- The Conclusion, Prabhas has been one of the biggest crowd pullers at the box office. No matter the end result of his films, his choice of films have always drawn the attention of the cinegoers on the first day of the release. Now 10 years after the release of Baahubali – The Beginning, Prabhas is attempting something that he has tried before. His upcoming release The Raja Saab directed by Maruthi is a comedy-horror film, a big departure from his over the top actions like Salaar: Part 1- Ceasefire or Saaho or Kalki 2898 AD. The Raja Saab is slated to release on 9th January along with a slate of other films, biggest among them would be Jana Nayagan- Thalapathy Vijay’s final film. The opening day streak

Prabhas and event films go hand and hand and no matter who the makers is, his films have always opened big barring just one film which was Radhe Shyam- a romantic film with Pooja Hegde.

  • Saaho- directed by Sujjeth had opened to Rs 89 crore day 1 collection, the buzz lived up to the expectation of being Prabhas’s first film post Baahubali success. The film couldn’t match the numbers achieved by SS Rajamouli’s film as it folded up with a Rs 310 crore collection.
  • Radhe Shyam marked a departure from Prabhas’s mass-action imag, with a softer genre. The film also had limited Hindi appeal and earned just Rs 43.1 crore on opening day and ended up as his lowest collection film with Rs 104 crore collection.
  • Adipurush was Om Raut’s re-telling of Ramayan and despite polarizing reactions the film earned Rs 86.75 crore on its opening day. Once again, Prabhas’s star power drove audiences and the film collected Rs 288.15 crore.
  • Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire directed by Prashanth ‘KGF’ Neel played to Prabhas’s strength and went on to earn Rs 90 crore on day 1 despite clashing with Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki.The film’s total collection stood at Rs 406 crore
  • Kalki 2898 AD was Nag Ashwin’s attempt of doing historical sci-fi and it scored a record high collection of Rs 95.3 crore opening day. The film went on to become one the biggest hits of Indian Cinema with Rs 646 crore collection.

This consistent streak—where four out of his last five major films opened above Rs 85 crore is unparalleled in Indian cinema.

What makes Prabhas click ?

Several factors explain why Prabhas continues streak at the box office:

  1. Pan-India Appeal: Most south actors have their fandom limited to certain areas like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan dominate Tamil speaking states while Mammoothy and Mohanlal are legends with Malayalam speaking audiences. But Prabhas enjoys near-equal fanbases across Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi markets. His films are marketed simultaneously as national events.
  2. Event-Style Projects: Be it Saaho, Salaar, or Kalki 2898 AD, his projects are mounted on massive budgets with VFX, scale, and action that demand big-screen viewing. Audiences who tastes have evolved post Pandemic know that a Prabhas starrer would give them everything they are looking for.
  3. Global Strategy: Prabhas’s films are planned with worldwide releases in mind, ensuring massive screen counts across India and overseas, which naturally boost Day 1 numbers.The Raja Saab’s breakeven point in North America is pegged as USD 10 million, the second biggest amount for him since Baahubali’s success.

In the crowded and competitive world of Indian cinema, Prabhas stands tall as the only actor who has made Rs 85 crore+ Day 1 openings his trademark. From Saaho to Salaar, from Adipurush to Kalki 2898 AD, he has proven time and again that his name alone can drive audiences to theatres in record numbers.
