Dussehra 2025: Significance
It has dual significance.
- The festival of Dussehra commemorates the day when Lord Rama fought the ten-headed demon king Ravana and rescued his wife, Sita. The event honours Lord Rama’s triumph over Ravana’s adharma (unrighteousness). In several regions of India, huge effigies of Ravana, Meghnad, and Kumbhakarna are burned as a ritual to celebrate the occasion.
- In addition to this, Vijayadashami also commemorates the victory of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. According to Hindu legend, Goddess Durga fought a long and fierce battle with Mahishasura for nine days and nights before defeating him on the tenth day, known as Vijayadashami. This victory symbolises the triumph of divine feminine power against evil.
