Devi Chandana opens up on battle with hepatitis A

Devi Chandana opens up on battle with hepatitis A after COVID-19 and H1N1; husband Kishore recalls: ‘She couldn’t talk, stand, or eat’

Actor Devi Chandana recently left fans and well-wishers concerned after revealing the serious health crisis she endured. In an emotional video on her YouTube channel, Devi disclosed that she was hospitalised for over a month after being diagnosed with hepatitis A, cautioning viewers against underestimating the disease.

ICU stay and severe symptoms

Devi was admitted after experiencing severe shortness of breath. Tests revealed her liver enzymes were alarmingly high, prompting doctors to move her to the ICU, where she remained for two weeks. “When I had COVID-19, I thought that was the worst it could get,” Devi shared. “But six months later, I contracted H1N1, which made COVID seem milder. Now, after going through hepatitis A, I feel this has been the most severe of the three.”

How the virus likely hit

Addressing speculation about how she contracted hepatitis A, Devi explained she hadn’t travelled extensively but had visited Munnar, attended a function in Mumbai, and participated in a shoot. “It was likely due to poor immunity,” she said. Her husband, Kishore, also recounted the ordeal. “She was so weak, she lay curled up like a leech on the bed. She couldn’t talk, stand, or eat. Whenever she tried, she vomited immediately. Her body and eyes turned yellow. Her bilirubin levels dropped to just 18, while her liver enzymes skyrocketed past 6000,” he said.Devi admitted that she initially ignored the symptoms, assuming her shortness of breath was due to cold weather. In reality, her liver was severely inflamed, affecting her ability to breathe.

Sharing a slice of life

Missing key moments, gratitude to fans

The illness forced her to miss important events, including the arangettam (debut performance) of her students. Devi expressed gratitude to everyone who reached out, adding that she was unable to use her phone for over three weeks due to ICU restrictions. She also addressed the lack of awareness about hepatitis A, saying, “Some people brushed it off like it was nothing. They don’t realize how dangerous it can be.”

Focused on recovery and urging caution

Now prioritising her liver health through nutritious food and a healthy lifestyle, Devi urged viewers to be cautious about what they eat and drink. “Please be careful about what you eat and drink. I’ve heard of people going into a coma after testing positive for hepatitis B. Avoid the temptation to binge on street food and always drink clean water. Surviving this illness was incredibly difficult, so please, take care.” Go to Source
