NCRB data: Crimes rise 7% in 2023, murders take a dip; UP & Bihar lead in killings

NEW DELHI: Murder cases dipped by around 3% in 2023 compared to 2022, according to data released by the National Crime Records Bureau.In 2023, 27,721 cases of murder leading to 28,587 deaths were registered. In 2022, 28,552 cases of murder, resulting in 29,356 deaths, were registered.As per the report, UP recorded highest number of murder cases, with 3,206 incidents and 3,307 victims, followed by Bihar (2,862 cases and 2,882 victims) and Maharashtra (2,208 cases and 2,274 victims).A total of 62,41,569 cognisable crimes comprising 37,63,102 IPC crimes and 24,78,467 Special & Local Laws (SLL) crimes were registered in 2023, NCRB data reveals. It showed an increase of 4,16,623 (7.2%) in registration of cases over 2022 (58,24,946 cases).

Crime rate registered per lakh population has increased from 422.2 in 2022 to 448.3 in 2023. During 2023, registration of cases under IPC and SLL crimes increased by 5.7% and 9.5%, respectively, over 2022. Percentage share of IPC was 60.3% while percentage share of SLL cases was 39.7% of total cognizable crimes during 2023. 29,670 rape cases were reported nationwide. Rajasthan recorded the highest number with 5,078 cases, followed by UP (3,516 cases) and MP (2,979 cases). Offences against public tranquility saw 58,247 cases registered under various IPC sections in 2023, with rioting accounting for 67.4% of these cases (39,260 incidents).Crimes against foreigners increased 24%, with 238 cases reported in 2023 compared to 192 in 2022. Human trafficking cases declined 3%, with 2,183 cases filed in 2023, down from 2,250 in 2022. In 2023, 4,84,584 persons were reported missing, including 1,59,811 males, 3,24,763 females, and 10 transgender individuals.Cases registered under offences against property increased by 4.7%, rising from 8,39,252 cases in 2022 to 8,78,307 cases in 2023. Theft was the most reported offence in this category, with 6,89,580 cases.Under the Arms Act, 73,388 cases were registered in 2023, a decrease from 80,118 cases in 2022. During the year, 82,756 arms were seized. Additionally, 3,51,656 fake Indian currency notes, valued at Rs 16,86,23,100, were seized in 2023. Go to Source
