The death toll of detainees in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has reached 16 since January, which marks more than double the total deaths reported in 2024.

In the most recent case, a shooter with a rifle opened fire from a nearby roof onto a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement location in Dallas on Wednesday, killing one detainee and wounding two others before taking his own life, authorities were cited as saying by the Associated Press.

In another separate incident that took place on Sunday, 39-year-old Ismael Ayala-Uribe, a former DACA recipient, died after undergoing surgery at the Adelanto ICE Processing Centre in California. His family alleges that his medical needs were ignored upon his arrival.

After Alaya Uribe’s death, the ICE released a statement and said, “ICE remains committed to ensuring that all those in its custody reside in safe, secure and humane environments. Comprehensive medical care is provided from the moment individuals arrive and throughout the entirety of their stay.”

Earlier this week, a 42-year-old Honduran national died while being in ICE custody in Nassau County, New York.

This comes as the Trump administration has ordered a federal immigration crackdown.

According to research by a migration data scientist based in Maryland, there has been a rise in deaths of detainees in ICE detentions.

“A total of 26 people passed away during the 48 months of the Biden administration. That’s a bit more than one death every second month (0.54 deaths per month). Only [approximately] eight months into the second Trump term … we’ve already seen 15 deaths, or nearly two detainee deaths per month (1.88). About half of the detainee deaths (12 of 26) during the Biden administration took place last fiscal year 2024, so detainee death rates were ramping up before Trump took office in 2025,” Sawyer was quoted as saying by AP.
