On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Russia, China, Pakistan and Iran, in a joint statement, issued a blunt warning to the Taliban, warning Kabul to dismantle terror networks or face consequences.

Pakistan has raised its voice against Afghan Taliban, demanding shutting down of all terror network and proxies in Afghanistan. Kabul is not following the Doha accord in true spirit, it has alleged. Islamabad has also pitched a case against Kabul over women and children’s rights.

Islamabad has asked the Afghan Taliban to control BLA, TTP, and other terrorists who are operating from Afghan soil.

The four powers voiced deep alarm over ISIL, Al-Qaida, ETIM, TTP, Jaish-ul-Adl, BLA and Majeed Brigade’s presence in Afghanistan. They pressed Taliban rulers to shut down militant camps, build an inclusive government, and safeguard women and minorities.

The ministers declared such groups a direct threat to regional and global security.

The Quadripartite vowed to shield the region against Afghan-based militancy while keeping doors open for economic cooperation with a stable Kabul.

What intelligence sources say

“This pressure on Kabul is potentially helpful but uncertain. Their primary focus is on Pakistan and China-linked threats,” said top intelligence sources.

“Kabul is treated as a monitored, indirect front rather than a target of direct action. India is using this as an opportunity to give its message to regional partners. We don’t need to exert direct pressure on Kabul as they have cooperated with us,” they said.

“Instead we are working on diplomatic channels, intelligence coordination, and strategic partnership with Kabul.”

Taliban-US fight

The Taliban government on Sunday rejected US President Donald Trump’s bid to retake Bagram Air Base, four years after America’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan left the sprawling military facility in the Taliban hands.

It is unclear what conversations the US has had with Afghan officials about returning to the country. But Trump hinted that the Taliban, who have struggled with an economic crisis, international legitimacy, internal rifts and rival militant groups since their return to power in 2021, could be open to allowing the US military back.

The chief Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, rejected Trump’s assertions and urged the US to adopt a policy of “realism and rationality.” Afghanistan had an economy-oriented foreign policy and sought constructive relations with all states on the basis of mutual and shared interests, Mujahid posted on X.

It had been consistently communicated to the US in all bilateral negotiations that Afghanistan’s independence and territorial integrity were of the utmost importance, he said.
