HC questions Wankhede’s plea against Aryan’s show: ‘Why in Delhi?’

Sameer Wankhede Sues Shah Rukh Khan's Production Over Netflix Series | Rs 2 Crore Defamation Case

As Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan’s directorial debut series ‘The Ba***ds Of Bollywood’ released, the internet was quick to witness Aryan’s ‘not-so-subtle’ dig at Sameer Wankhede. This character seen in the first episode steps out of a police jeep with a stern expression, his voice booming as he delivers a fiery monologue about a “war against drugs,” branding the entire film industry as plagued by substance abuse. Introducing himself as part of the ‘war against drugs’ and the ‘NCG,’ he’s shown in a white shirt and dark trousers, his lean frame and cropped hair bearing an uncanny resemblance to Wankhede. Soon after, Wankhede filed a defamation case against Shah Rukh Khan, Gauri Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment along with Netflix over ‘The Ba***ds Of Bollywood’. Now as per the latest update on the matter, according to PTI, the Delhi High Court has questioned Wankhede’s plea after hearing it on Friday. Wankhede has asked the court for damages, a declaration, and an injunction to stop the streaming of the show, which he says portrays him in a false and damaging light. But before getting into the details of the case, Justice Kaurav wanted to know one thing, “Why file a suit in Delhi?” The court has now asked him to amend his plea and address the issue of why the case wasn’t brought in Mumbai, where most of the events are tied. According to Wankhede’s plea, the show does more than attack him personally. He argues that it casts anti-drug enforcement agencies in a negative, misleading way, eroding people’s trust in law enforcement itself. “This series disseminates a misleading and negative portrayal of anti-drug enforcement agencies, thereby eroding public confidence in law enforcement institutions,” the petition states. The officer also claims the show was “deliberately conceptualised and executed with the intent to malign Sameer Wankhede’s reputation in a colourable and prejudicial manner,” especially since matters involving him and Aryan Khan are still under consideration before the Bombay High Court and the NDPS Special Court in Mumbai. One of the most controversial moments flagged in the suit is a scene where a character, after reciting ‘Satyamev Jayate,’ makes an obscene gesture. Wankhede has called this a serious breach of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, saying it attracts penal consequences. The petition further points out violations of the Information Technology Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, alleging that the show uses offensive material not just to insult individuals but to provoke outrage against national sentiment.Even in seeking damages, Wankhede has tried to underline that this isn’t only about him. His suit demands Rs 2 crore in damages, but he has asked that the money if given to him, should go directly to the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital to support cancer patients. However, after Wankhede’s plea, netizens are wondering if he will be able to prove that the show took a dig at him, as there is no name mentioned in it.
