With Bihar’s assembly election dates expected to be announced early next month, political parties have begun aggressive campaigning, focusing heavily on women voters, who make up nearly half the electorate. The ruling NDA, led by BJP and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is launching a new women-focused employment scheme, under which nearly 75 lakh women will receive ₹1,000 directly in their bank accounts. Over six months, the total aid will reach ₹6,000 per beneficiary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the scheme, which is being widely promoted as a sign of NDA’s commitment to women’s welfare. Meanwhile, the opposition Mahagathbandhan, led by RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, has accused the NDA of copying their ideas. Tejashwi ridiculed the government, saying “Bihar’s women are No.1 in wisdom, and Nitish Kumar is No.1 in copying.” He has promised ₹1,500 monthly aid to women under the “Mai Bahna Yojana.” The caste debate also rages on. The Congress-RJD alliance has announced a ‘Nyay Sankalp’ plan for extremely backward classes, proposing an increase in reservation from 20% to 30%, and challenging the 50% reservation cap. With women and caste politics at the center, Bihar gears up for a fierce electoral showdown.
