Donald Trump Presidential Library: DeSantis proposes 2.6-acre Florida land in Miami

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Tuesday unveiled a plan to dedicate a prime piece of land in downtown Miami for a future presidential library honouring US President Donald Trump. The proposal is likely a part of a push by DeSantis and Republican lawmakers to demonstrate loyalty to Trump, who has made Florida his political base since changing his voter registration from New York in 2019.As per news agency AP, the planned site spans 2.63 acres (1.06 hectares) adjacent to the historic Freedom Tower, a Spanish Revival skyscraper that once housed one of Miami’s first newspapers and later served as a processing centre for Cuban refugees. Notably, the tower has also been a recent site of protests against Trump’s immigration policies. The parcel, currently used as a parking lot for Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus, faces Biscayne Bay and is valued at more than $66 million, according to county property records. “This is the greatest political comeback story in American history,” said Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, who will vote on the proposal at a September 30 meeting of the state Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund, according to AP. “Florida will be blessed to house the library for one of our own state presidents and to be a part of such meaningful history”, he added.DeSantis, who will chair the board, said the library would honour Trump’s achievements and provide a lasting historical resource. “No state has better delivered the President’s agenda than the Free State of Florida, and we would be honoured to house his presidential library here in his home state,” he said. The Florida Cabinet, including the governor, the attorney general, the chief financial officer, and the commissioner of agriculture, will vote on the land transfer. Earlier this year, DeSantis signed legislation preventing local governments from blocking presidential library developments, easing the way for projects in Republican-leaning counties. The foundation had previously considered other Miami-area sites, including Florida International University and Florida Atlantic University near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club, before selecting the Freedom Tower-adjacent parcel. The Freedom Tower site has symbolic and practical significance. Besides its immigrant heritage, it sits in a historically Cuban-American district, a community that overwhelmingly supported Trump but has shown some dissent over his immigration policies. The parcel is located roughly 12 miles from Trump National Doral, a golf course that will host next year’s G20 Summit, and near other South Florida landmarks, according to Politico. The foundation overseeing the library has already secured tens of millions of dollars from legal settlements, including a Meta lawsuit and a defamation case against ABC News. While it can accept political contributions immediately, it cannot solicit tax-deductible donations until receiving IRS approval. Plans may include displaying items such as Trump’s Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar.
