‘There Are No Winners’: UN On Rising Use Of Tariffs And Trade Barriers Between Major Economies

Highlighting the UN’s stance on the rising use of tariffs, spokesperson for UNSG Stéphane Dujarric said, “In a trade war, there are no winners.”

Amid the rising use of tariffs and trade barriers between major economies, including the United States and India, the United Nations said that there can not be any winner when it comes to trade war.

Highlighting the UN’s stance on the rising use of tariffs, especially when they impact developing countries like India, spokesperson for UNSG Stéphane Dujarric said, “In a trade war, there are no winners.”

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly High-level Week. The meeting reportedly focused on various aspects of the bilateral partnership.

Later, the US Department of State, in an official release, reaffirmed India’s “critical importance” to the United States and welcomed India’s continued engagement on core sectors of mutual interest.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump recently extended birthday greetings to Prime Minister Modi on September 17. In a social media post, Prime Minister Modi expressed his shared commitment with Trump to advancing the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership to new heights.

PM Modi also reaffirmed India’s support for Trump’s efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict. On a Social Media post, President Trump described the call as “wonderful,” thanking Prime Minister Modi for his support in seeking an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.
