As rescuers intensified efforts to locate those missing after a devastating landslide struck Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Wednesday, they recovered the body of a mother still holding her twin sons close—her final, heartbreaking attempt to shield them.

The body of the mother was found tightly embracing her twin sons—both just 10 years old—beneath the rubble in Nandanagar locality. The 38-year-old woman’s body was found with her sons, Vishal and Vikas, clinging to her, their final moments forever frozen in an image that has shaken even the most seasoned rescuers. Her instinct to shield her kids from harm, even as their home was engulfed, paints a touching picture of love in the face of nature’s fury.

The heart-wrenching moment came a day after the woman’s husband, Kunwar Singh, was miraculously pulled out alive from the same debris after remaining stuck for over 16 hours, following a powerful cloudburst and relentless rainfall that unleashed landslides and torrents of mud through the Nandanagar area on Wednesday.

Since the disaster struck, eight people were reported missing, prompting an extensive response from the district administration along with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Flash floods and landslides have caused widespread destruction, washing away infrastructure, homes, and livelihoods in the state.

Search operations continue with urgency, and relief camps have been established to support families displaced by the calamity.
