Today, whether you’re opening a bank account, travelling abroad, or handling government or personal tasks, IDs like Aadhaar, PAN card, Voter ID, and Passport are essential. They not only verify your identity but also give you access to various government services and schemes.

When someone passes away, families often wonder what to do with their important IDs. Here’s a simple guide to handling these documents responsibly.

PAN cards are now also used as a business ID for financial transactions. After a person’s death, it’s important to surrender their PAN card to the Income Tax Department to prevent misuse. Before surrendering, transfer any accounts linked to the PAN to another person’s name.

Aadhaar is a universal ID issued by UIDAI. While it cannot be surrendered after death, it can be locked to prevent misuse. Locking the Aadhaar ensures no one can use it for fraudulent activities.

Passports cannot be surrendered after death. They must be kept safe to avoid misuse. Normally, passports are renewed every 10 years, and failure to do so automatically invalidates them.

Voter ID is essential for voting. After a person passes away, their voter ID can be cancelled by submitting Form 7 at the local Election Commission office. This ensures the ID is no longer active and prevents misuse.
