US President Donald Trump voiced frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin, declaring his counterpart had “really let me down” as the war in Ukraine grinds on with no sign of resolution.

“Putin let me down, he really let me down. Russia and Ukraine will get done. But you never know in war. War is a different thing. Things happen that are the very opposite of what you thought,” Donald Trump said.

The remarks build on comments earlier this week in which Donald Trump admitted his patience with Vladimir Putin was “running out fast,” though he stopped short of announcing new sanctions.

The US president said he had long maintained a “good relationship” with the Russian leader but was disappointed by his failure to bring the conflict to an end.

“We’re going to have to come down very, very strong,” Donald Trump warned, citing sanctions on Russian banks and oil as possible next steps.

Russia-Ukraine War Continues

Donald Trump’s comments came as Russia’s top general Valery Gerasimov claimed Moscow’s forces were “advancing in practically all directions” across Ukraine. Touring frontline positions, Gerasimov said the fiercest clashes were around the strategic hub of Pokrovsk in eastern Donetsk, where Ukrainian troops were committing their “best-trained units.” He argued this was allowing Russian troops to gain ground in other sectors.

“Our troops in the zone of the special military operation are advancing in practically all directions,” Gerasimov said.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disputed that assessment, insisting Russian forces had made little progress despite recent offensives.
