A political party in Japan said that it will replace its human leader with artificial intelligence, in what could be a first for mainstream politics. The Path to Rebirth party, founded in January by former city mayor Shinji Ishimaru, announced the decision after Ishimaru resigned following a poor showing in this year’s upper house elections.

Koki Okumura, a 25-year-old doctoral student at Kyoto University who will serve as the nominal head of the party, said, “The new leader will be AI. The AI will not dictate political activities of members, but will focus on decisions such as resource distribution among them.”

Koki Okumura, who won an internal contest to succeed Ishimaru, said that details about the AI’s development and implementation were still being decided. Despite drawing attention for Ishimaru’s surprise second-place finish in the 2024 Tokyo gubernatorial race- fueled largely by online campaigning- the Path to Rebirth has yet to secure a seat in elected office. All 42 of its candidates lost in the Tokyo assembly elections in June and its 10 contenders in the July upper house vote were also unsuccessful.

AI And Politics Worldwide

The decision to put AI at the helm highlights a growing global trend of political movements experimenting with artificial intelligence. In Denmark, the Synthetic Party, launched in 2022, is guided by AI trained on fringe party platforms, aiming to represent non-voters. In Japan, another group, Team Mirai, founded by an AI engineer and writer, recently won a proportional representation seat in the House of Councillors. In the UK, independent candidate Andrew Gray used AI tools to crowdsource and draft his manifesto during the 2023 Selby & Ainsty by-election.
