SC cancels bail of Chhota Rajan, asks 'why suspension of sentence'

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday cancelled the bail granted to gangster Chhota Rajan by Bombay high court in the murder of hotelier Jaya Shetty in 2001.Rajan was sentenced to life in the Shetty murder case in May 2024. The apex court, led by Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, allowed the CBI’s appeal against high court order. SC said Rajan’s case was not fit for suspension of sentence. His counsel argued CBI found no evidence in 48 of 72 cases, but the court was unmoved. “Conviction in four cases and abscondence of 27 years… why suspension of sentence to such a man?” the bench asked. Shetty was killed after refusing extortion demand of Rs 50,000.
