Queen Camilla withdrew from attending the funeral of the Duchess of Kent as she recovers from acute sinusitis, Buckingham Palace announced, just hours before US President Donald Trump was due to arrive in Britain on a state visit. The palace said the 78-year-old Queen made the decision with “great regret” but is expected to resume duties later this week.

“With great regret, Her Majesty The Queen has withdrawn from attendance at this afternoon’s Requiem Mass for The Duchess of Kent as she is recovering from acute sinusitis,” a palace spokesperson said as per AFP.

Queen Camilla is scheduled to join King Charles III for a packed programme of events during Donald Trump’s two-day visit this week. According to the PA news agency, Queen Camilla hopes to recover in time to receive the Trumps alongside the King at Windsor Castle.

The late Duchess of Kent, who died on September 5 aged 92, was married to Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, a cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Her funeral service at Westminster Cathedral was to be attended by King Charles- still undergoing cancer treatment- along with the Prince and Princess of Wales. The requiem mass marks a historic moment as it is the first Catholic funeral for a member of the British royal family in modern history.
