For many Indians, an international holiday has long been a dream kept on hold, delayed by costs, complex planning, or family priorities. But a recent Goods and Services Tax (GST) tweak may finally give that dream a little push.

By lowering everyday expenses and easing the burden of big-ticket purchases, the GST cut has freed up household budgets. For India’s growing middle class, that means extra room for aspirational goals and a first stamp on the passport.

Small Savings, Big Impact

The government’s new GST policy has introduced cuts across essential categories. Groceries, household products, and personal care items are now cheaper. While the savings may seem small on a single bill, they add up across weeks and months.

One of the most visible benefits is in the hospitality sector. Mid-market hotels, previously taxed at 12% with Input Tax Credit, are now at 5% without Input Tax Credit (ITC) for rooms priced between ₹1,000 and ₹7,500 a night. This shift makes staycations, family getaways, and domestic stopovers more affordable.

Flights remain steady at 5% GST for economy tickets. The rates haven’t changed, but the predictability itself helps households plan ahead without fear of sudden fare hikes. Together, these changes are creating confidence in families to reprioritise their savings and explore bigger plans.

Big Purchases, Lighter Burden

Beyond daily expenses, GST has also been reduced on major spends like electronics, vehicles, and even insurance. These are significant outlays for middle-class households. Any relief here eases psychological barriers, allowing families to consider discretionary spending on travel.

“When large expenses feel lighter, families are more willing to commit to aspirational plans such as international holidays,” explains Mohak Nahta, Founder and CEO, Atlys. “Every rupee saved creates more space in household budgets. With foreign travel becoming a lifestyle choice rather than a luxury, this category will see a direct boost. At Atlys, our focus is to make that journey seamless by simplifying visas and travel processes.”

Millions Ready for First-Time Travel

India’s appetite for international travel is undeniable. Between 2014 and 2023, the country issued over 10.09 crore passports, with nearly 85% issued domestically. Yet, according to MEA data, only 8.71% of Indians currently hold an active passport. That leaves millions of potential first-time travellers waiting in the wings.

What’s changing now is the mindset. Foreign holidays were once seen as luxuries reserved for elites or students. Today, families from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities like Jaipur, Indore, Coimbatore, and Lucknow are entering the global travel market.

Affordable Gateways

Tour operators are already adapting to the demand. Travel packages increasingly combine domestic stopovers with short-haul overseas trips. Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, and the Middle East have emerged as the top picks for new travellers. These destinations score high on affordability, proximity, and easy visa processes, all essentials for first-time international tourists.

A Market Ready for Take-Off

GST savings are more than a technical policy win; they’re reshaping household choices. Lower costs on groceries and hotels might not feel dramatic at first, but they ripple across budgets. Over time, they translate into confidence, the kind that helps a family finally book that long-postponed trip abroad.

For India’s middle class, that first foreign holiday is no longer a distant dream. With GST easing the path, a passport stamp may be just around the corner.
