UK fighter jets have been ordered to join a NATO operation over Poland following a serious breach of allied airspace by Russian drones last week, the UK Defence Ministry announced Monday.

In a post on X, the British Defence Ministry announced that Royal Air Force Typhoon jets will soon begin air defence missions over Poland as part of NATO’s Eastern Sentry operation.

“The UK’s commitment to helping NATO defend every inch of allied territory is unshakeable. Royal Air Force Typhoons will fly air defence missions over Poland as part of Eastern Sentry following Russia’s reckless and dangerous drone incursion into Poland last week.” The RAF missions are set to begin in the coming days,” the ministry in a statement said.

Poland Scrambles Jets After Incursion

NATO chief Mark Rutte had earlier signalled that the alliance would reinforce its eastern flank after Polish forces responded to Russian UAVs entering their airspace. Poland scrambled fighters last week, marking the first time NATO aircraft have been used to shoot down drones violating allied territory since the war in Ukraine began more than three years ago.

Neighboring Romania also reported a drone breach on Saturday, prompting their own military response. The continuous incursions have raised alarm throughout NATO, which views them as serious threats to European sovereignty.

UK PM Condemns Breach

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer denounced the actions as “reckless behaviour” that violates international law and threatens not just Poland, but wider European security.

“These aircraft are not just a show of strength,” Starmer said. “They are vital in deterring aggression and protecting NATO airspace.”

On Monday, Starmer’s government also summoned Russian ambassador Andrei Kelin to London over what the Foreign Office called a “significant and unprecedented violation” of NATO airspace. The UK also warned that any further breaches would be met with force.

“Significant and unprecedented violation of Polish and NATO airspace by Russian drones last week, followed by a further incursion into Romanian airspace on Saturday, was utterly unacceptable,” the govt said in a statement.

Britain is not alone in sending aircraft to Poland. France, Germany, and Denmark have also agreed to deploy fighter jets under the “Eastern Sentry” mission.
