The political crisis in Nepal persists as the nation continues to search for an interim Prime Minister following the Gen-Z protests that toppled KP Sharma Oli’s government. Suspense surrounds the future leadership of the country, with efforts to resolve the constitutional crisis regarding the selection of an interim leader still underway.

In a surprising turn of events, reports indicate that former Chief Justice of Nepal Sushila Karki has re-emerged as a frontrunner for the interim Prime Minister role.

Midnight Meeting Brings A Sudden Twist

According to sources, a pivotal meeting took place at Shital Niwas, the presidential residence, late on Thursday night. Attendees included Nepali Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel, Sushila Karki, Speaker of the National Assembly Narayan Prasad Dahal, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Prakash Man Singh Raut. Various constitutional experts also participated in the discussions, which concluded with a consensus in favour of Sushila Karki assuming leadership.

Sources indicate that Sushila Karki has garnered significant support, particularly from the Gen-Z movement that led to Oli’s ousting. According to sources, Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, also known as Balen, has thrown his weight behind Karki, opting to focus on winning a future election rather than taking on the interim role himself.

How Sushila Karki Could Assume The Prime Minister’s Post

To address the deadlock, a crisis management team convened at midnight to finalise the interim leadership, sources said. On Thursday, President Ram Chandra Poudel called for peace and stressed the need to find a solution within the framework of the 2015 Constitution.

According to sources, Paudel said that while there is no provision for a political interim prime minister, a space will be created by nominating Sushila Karki to the Upper House, after which he will be made prime minister. Sources said that the President can issue an ordinance to make the necessary provisions during this process. He added that the announcement is likely to be made on Friday.

From Refusal To Acceptance

On Thursday, reports emerged that Sushila Karki had withdrawn her name from the race for prime minister. Following this, the Army Chief reportedly proposed Kulman Ghising, but no consensus was reached on his nomination either. Reports suggest that the Army Chief spent around 15 hours persuading Sushila Karki.

An official announcement regarding her appointment is anticipated on Friday, marking a crucial day in Nepal’s political landscape. The interim government will also bear the responsibility of conducting elections within the next six months.
