CP Radhakrishnan takes oath as Vice President of India

CP Radhakrishnan has been sworn in as the 15th Vice President of India. President Droupadi Murmu administered to him the oath of office.

CP Radhakrishnan was on Friday sworn in as the 15th Vice President of India.

President Droupadi Murmu administered to Radhakrishnan the office of oath at the Ganatantra Mandap, Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former President Ram Nath Kovind, Chief Justice BR Gavai, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and others, the Rashtrapati Bhavan said in a statement.

As the Vice President, Radhakrishnan will preside over the Rajya Sabha as its Chairman.

Radhakrishnan, the candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), won the vice presidential election on Tuesday. He secured 452 votes against INDIA bloc’s candidate B Sudershan Reddy’s 300. The majority-mark was 377.

As the NDA had 427 votes, the fact that Radhakrishnan got 452 votes suggests that people from outside of the NDA indulged in cross-voting in his favour.

The vice presidential election was necessitated by the surprise resignation of previous vice president, Jagdeep Dhankhar, in July.

Radhakrishnan most recently served as the Governor of Maharashtra. He was previously the Governor of Jharkhand and a Member of Parliament. In a previous role as the BJP’s chief of the Tamil Nadu unit, he is considered to have played an important role in establishing the party in the state.

The Article 66 of the Constitution of India governs the vice president’s election. It says that an Electoral College of all members of Lok Sabha and Rajya elect the vice president by a simple majority. In this election, 240 Rajya Sabha MPs and 542 Lok Sabha MPs formed the electoral college as there were five vacancies in the Raja Sabha and one vacancy in the Lok Sabha.
