US President Donald Trump downplayed Russia’s involvement in the recent breach of airspace over Poland on Tuesday, suggesting the violation could have been a “mistake.” His remarks came just hours after he posted on Truth Social questioning the drone incursions, following Russian drone attacks near the border.

When reporters asked Trump for his reaction to the airspace violation, he replied, “It could have been a mistake. But regardless, I’m not happy with anything to do with that whole situation.” He added, “But hopefully it’s going to come to an end,” without elaborating further, as reported by the Kyiv Independent.

These comments mark Trump’s first public statements addressing the incident directly. Initially, he had only commented on social media, tweeting, “What’s with Russia violating Poland’s airspace with drones? Here we go!”

The incident on September 10 saw Poland’s Air Force shoot down at least three Russian drones, marking the first time since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine that such an event occurred. 19 Russian drones were recorded crossing into Polish territory, an act European officials interpret as a deliberate test of NATO’s resolve.

Trump’s relatively lenient assessment contrasts sharply with the stances of US allies. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski accused Russia of deliberately violating Poland’s airspace and emphasised the seriousness of the incursion. In response, Poland activated Article 4 of the NATO treaty, which allows member states to request consultations if they perceive a threat to their security.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte described the drone incursions as “reckless behaviour,” emphasising that such actions are unacceptable, regardless of intent.

Russian officials, however, have denied any wrongdoing. Following the incident, Russia’s Defense Ministry stated that Moscow had “not planned to hit” any targets in Poland. Andrei Ordash, Russia’s charge d’affaires in Warsaw, dismissed claims that the drones shot down over Polish territory were Russian.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the European Union to respond decisively to the airspace breach. On September 11, he urged the EU to impose a powerful 19th sanctions package on Russia as the best response to these violations.
