On multiple occasions, he invited students to debate with him in quick-fire exchanges that often went viral online.
It was during one of these events in Utah on Wednesday that he was shot in the neck in a moment of violence that was swiftly condemned by political leaders, including US President Donald Trump.
In September 2024, Kirk was among the first to share allegations that Haitian immigrants were eating cats and dogs in Ohio.
In one such widely shared video, Kirk could be heard keeping forth his stance on abortion. As seen in the video, Kirk was asked what if his own daughter were raped and became pregnant.
He responded by saying that the baby would be delivered.
“So, if you had a daughter and she was 10 and she got raped, and she was gonna give birth, and she would gonna give birth, would you want her to go through that and carry her baby?” Kirk was asked.
Interrupting the question, Kirk said, “I do have a daughter,” and opined that the question was “awfully graphic”.
“No, but it’s a real-life scenario that happens to many people,” the reporter continued.
“The answer is yes, the baby would be delivered,” Kirk responded, adding, “Let me tell you why, hold on, let me ask you a question.”
The reporter, meanwhile, said, “Oh, okay, great, so that’s insane.”
