NEW DELHI: Exiled Bangladeshi writer and activist Taslima Nasreen returned to Kolkata on Friday, marking her first public visit to the city in nearly two decades after being forced to leave amid protests over her memoir “Dwikhandito”.Describing her return as an emotional homecoming, Nasreen said coming back to Kolkata felt like returning to “my own country”.According to news agency PTI, Nasreen is scheduled to attend a programme in the city on August 1. The event is also expected to be attended by West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari and noted author Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay. This is Nasreen’s first public appearance in Kolkata since 2007, when widespread protests over her memoir compelled her to leave the city, which had been her home after she fled Bangladesh in the 1990s.Her memoir “Dwikhandito” (Split in Two) was banned by the then Left Front government in West Bengal in 2003 for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of the Muslim community.
