Titan experiences clouds, rain, rivers and changing seasons like Earth; Saturn’s 29-year journey around the Sun makes each season last more than seven Earth years

Titan has four seasons much like Earth’s, but there is one very strange catch to them

A single winter on Saturn’s largest moon lasts long enough for a newborn on Earth to grow into an eight-year-old child.Titan, the second-largest moon in the solar system, has active weather with clouds, rain, rivers, and changing seasons that look a lot like Earth’s. However, because its home planet Saturn takes roughly 29 Earth years to make one full trip around the Sun, a single season on Titan stretches for about seven and a half Earth years.NASA highlights Titan as the only moon in our solar system with a thick atmosphere, and the only world besides Earth known to have liquid flowing across its surface. Reports shared by Space Daily and Phys.org show how this long trip around the Sun changes the timeline of weather on the moon.

Planetary tilt causes long seasons

Seasons happen because a world leans on its axis, causing different parts of it to catch more direct sunlight as it moves around the Sun. Earth leans at about 23 degrees, while Saturn leans at roughly 27 degrees. Because Titan orbits around Saturn’s equator, it shares the ringed planet’s tilt and follows its slow 29-year trip around the Sun.When you divide Saturn’s long orbit into four parts, each season on Titan lasts about 7.5 Earth years. Much of what we know about these long seasons comes from NASA’s Cassini spacecraft, which flew past Titan more than 100 times between 2004 and 2017, alongside its Huygens probe that landed on the moon’s surface in 2005. Even though the Cassini mission lasted 13 years, it observed less than half of a single Titan year. Because of this, space scientists have to study the weather using only a partial picture of the full cycle.

Liquid methane and disappearing lakes

While Titan’s water cycle works like Earth’s weather, the liquid involved is very different. Surface temperatures on the moon are so cold that water ice is as hard as rock. Instead of liquid water, Titan’s weather runs on liquid methane and ethane, which are the main parts of natural gas.Methane clouds produce rain that fills lakes and feeds rivers across the surface. Data gathered by Cassini showed that several small lakes in Titan’s northern area are deeper than 100 metres (300 feet) and are made mostly of liquid methane. Other shallower bodies of liquid seem to dry up and disappear as seasons change.Explaining these disappearing lakes, scientist Shannon MacKenzie of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory gave a cautious reason for what the spacecraft saw.“One possibility is that these transient features could have been shallower bodies of liquid that over the course of the season evaporated and infiltrated into the subsurface,” says MacKenzie.

Changing winds and moving sand dunes

Signs of changing seasons also show up near Titan’s equator, which is covered by long sand dunes that stand 100 metres high and stretch for hundreds of kilometres. Radar images from the Cassini spacecraft showed that some smaller dunes point in a different direction, shifting by about 23 degrees from the main dunes. This shift shows that wind directions change over long climate cycles.Farther north, these sand dunes grow thin and disappear. Alice Le Gall, a planetary scientist at LATMOS in Paris, shared a theory about why dunes do not form higher up on the moon.Le Gall believes that as one goes north, “the soil moisture probably increases, making the sand particles less mobile and, as a consequence, the development of dunes more difficult”.

The mystery of Titan’s methane air

Mars has seasons and big dust storms, but Titan is special because it has liquid flowing across its open ground. It is the only place other than Earth where lakes fill up and dry out as weather shifts over time.Even after years of study, big questions about Titan’s air remain unsolved. Sunlight constantly breaks down methane in the atmosphere, so scientists do not know why the moon has not run out of it yet.Jonathan Lunine, a scientist at Cornell University who worked on the Cassini team, pointed out the biggest mystery about the moon’s air.“The most interesting question is why is there still lots of methane in the atmosphere of Titan? Where’s it coming from?” says Lunine.Researchers are still studying data from the Cassini-Huygens mission to figure out where this methane comes from, since it is the fuel that drives Titan’s long, decade-spanning weather system.

Atmospheric weight and buoyancy

Titan’s thick atmosphere exerts a surface pressure 50 percent higher than Earth’s, composed primarily of 95 percent nitrogen and 5 percent methane. Despite the high pressure, Titan’s surface gravity is only about 14 percent of Earth’s, roughly equivalent to our Moon’s. This unique combination of high surface air density (four times denser than Earth’s) and low gravity creates enough aerodynamic lift that a human wearing artificial wings could easily fly through Titan’s skies by flapping their arms.

The hidden water ocean

Deep beneath its icy outer crust, Titan harbors a global subsurface liquid ocean containing water mixed with ammonia. Measurements of tidal bulging taken as the moon orbits Saturn show that this ocean layer lies between 50 to 100 kilometres (30 to 60 miles) underground. The high salt and ammonia content acts as a natural antifreeze, keeping the water liquid despite surface temperatures hovering around -179 degrees Celsius (-290 degrees Fahrenheit). Go to Source
